Why is our cottage called Plampalacka?
Plampalack is an old regional term for a weaver. Our cottage is unusual in that it has a larger sitting room with a higher ceiling than other cottages in the area. We fit two looms in here.
Stromkovice has been an associated municipality of Jablonec nad Jizerou since 1967. However, the post office belongs to Jilemnice. The village has no street, church, shop or school. It consists of 67 houses, often still timbered, which are scattered on the northern and north-western slope of the Kobyla hill (895 m). Individual houses are connected mostly by stone-lined roads or just forest paths. The only asphalt road winds along the Vejpalický brook at the foot of Kobyla. The telephone was only introduced throughout the village in 1998. The whole area falls under the administration of the Krkonoše National Park. Nowadays, the name of the village fully describes its character. The once well-kept meadows and fields are overgrown with mature trees from raids. A large part of Stromkovice is inaccessible by car in winter. People leave their cars in the car parks in Jestřabí (on the hill) or in Stromkovice or in Horní Dušnice at the foot of Kobyla. They continue on foot, but more often on cross-country skis. Older inhabitants prefer snowshoes. Due to its northern orientation, the area is often accessible only from the end of April.
